Brentford's start to 2021 was delayed as the Sky Bet Championship game against Bristol City, schedule for this afternoon, did not take place. Instead, it will be Brentford's first-ever major Semi-Final that will be their first game of the year. The Bees will face Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup Semi-Final on Tuesday, 5 January, in a game that will kick-off at 7.45pm.

Brentford sit third in the Championship after this afternoon's matches and face a Tottenham side that beat Leeds United 3-0 earlier today to climb to third in the Premier League. Teams below them have games in hand but The Bees will be taking on one of the country's top teams. The match will also be Brentford's first visit to the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This will be the fifth Premier League side The Bees have faced in their Carabao Cup run. After a First Round win over Wycombe Wanderers, Brentford knocked out Southampton, West Bromwich Albion, Fulham and Newcastle United to reach the last four. It is the first time Brentford have reached this stage of any major cup competition.

Tottenham reached this stage with a win over Stoke City. They entered the competition at the Third Round and had a bye over Leyton Orient at that stage due to the League Two side being unable to field a team due to a Covid-19 outbreak. They beat Chelsea on penalties in the Fourth Round.

This is the fourth time the sides have been drawn against each other in this competition in the last 30 years. Tottenham won two-legged Second Round ties in 1992, 1998 and 2000. The Bees last faced the North London side in league competition in the 1949/50 season and in 12 games between the teams have won one and drawn three.

Tottenham's win over Leeds today came after four Premier League games without victory. They beat Stoke, in the Carabao Cup, and Royal Antwerp, in the Europa League, before Christmas but had not won a Premier League game since success over Arsenal at the start of December. A home defeat against Leicester City just before Christmas was their second home reverse of the campaign and they have won four of eight on their own patch, as well as the Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea and nine points out of nine in the Europa League.

Tuesday's match will, unfortunately, be behind closed doors. It will, however, be available live on Sky Sports. As per the EFL communication on the broadcast arrangements for the new season, all Carabao Cup ties that are selected for live coverage by Sky Sports will only be available on that platform.
