Brentford midfield player Mathias Jensen has been added to the Denmark squad for three upcoming qualification matches for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Denmark play a trio of games in six days next month as they attempt to reach the World Cup, which will be played in Qatar 15 months from now. The initial squad was announced earlier this week and included Brentford’s Christian Nørgaard. Denmark added Mathias to the group earlier today, Sunday 29 August.

The qualification process for the World Cup is already underway and Denmark have made a great start. They are in European Qualification Group F and have won three games out of three. They play Scotland in Copenhagen on Wednesday, 1 September, before travelling to play Faroe Islands on 4 September. The last of their three games is at home to Israel on 7 September.

Denmark are four points ahead of Scotland in Group F and five ahead of Israel and Austria. The group winner will qualify for the World Cup. The teams that finish second will enter a play-off for the additional places in the tournament, which will start on 21 November 2022.

When Mathias Jensen came off the substitute’s bench to play for Denmark in their UEFA European Championships Semi-Final in July, he earned his 12th cap. Mathias played a part in all six of Denmark’s games as they reached the last four in the delayed Euro 2020, played last summer due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since The Bees entered the EFL more than a century ago, more than 1,000 players have appeared in our colours and only three – Henrik Dalsgaard, John Buttigieg and Kamohelo Mokotjo – have played more international games while on Brentford’s books.

Mathias has come through the ranks with the Danish national team. He was Under-21 Player of the Year in 2017 and captained his country at that level in the UEFA European Under-21 Championships in 2019. He has also played in Denmark’s Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 teams and has earned 30 youth international caps in total, scoring three goals.
