Halil named in Turkey squad

Striker available for upcoming World Cup qualification matches

30 August 2021

Brentford striker Halil Dervişoğlu has been named in Turkey’s squad for upcoming qualification matches for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Turkey play Montenegro on Wednesday, 1 September, before travelling to Gibraltar and the Netherlands. Turkey named a 26-player squad that includes Halil.

As per a statement from the Premier League last week, our players will not travel to countries where they would have to quarantine on return – Red List countries. Turkey is on the Red List so Halil will meet up with the squad after the first game. He will be available to play for them in Gibraltar and the Netherlands.

Turkey are in Group G of the European section of the World Cup qualifiers. They have taken seven points from three games and top the group. Netherlands, Montenegro and Norway are just a point behind ahead of a trio of matches for each country in the next ten days as they look to reach the tournament, being played in Qatar next year.

This is Halil’s second call-up for his country, having made his debut ahead of the delayed UEFA 2020 European Championships, held this summer. He was named in the squad for that tournament and played two games. He has won four full international caps and scored on his debut.

Halil was a regular for Turkey’s Under-21s before his promotion to the full international squad. He scored five goals in three appearances for them last season and has eight goals in 13 games for his county overall. He can now add to his full international caps.

Halil joined The Bees from Sparta Rotterdam in early 2020. He made seven appearances for The Bees in his first half season in England, starting in two Emirates FA Cup ties against Stoke City and Leicester City. He played twice for The Bees last season between two loan spells – at FC Twente, in the Netherlands, and at Galatasaray Spor Kulübü, in Turkey – featuring in a Carabao Cup win at Southampton and scoring in an FA Cup win over Middlesbrough. He has been in every matchday squad so far this season and played against Forest Green Rovers in the Carabao Cup last week.
