Match Preview: Huddersfield Town vs Brentford

All the build-up to Saturday's visit to the John Smith's Stadium

2 April 2021

A Saturday lunchtime trip to Huddersfield Town is our introduction back to Sky Bet Championship action following the international break. The Terriers have a seven-point cushion over the relegation zone heading into the final nine game sprint to the line. All the info ahead of tomorrow's game can be found below.

THE OPPOSITION

Huddersfield Town tasked new Head Coach Carlos Corberán with not only keeping them in the second tier this season but also bringing a new style of play to the John Smith's Stadium.

On both fronts he appears to be succeeding as The Terriers head into the final nine games of the campaign with a seven-point gap between themselves and the bottom three. They are also the second-highest scorers in the bottom-half and only Norwich City have had more possession than them this term.

It hasn't always been plain sailing under the former Leeds United coach. The Terriers won just one in 13 across January and February, shortly after Corberán signed a new long-term deal. For much of that run, The Terriers were without ten first-team regulars and their return to fitness in recent weeks has brought about an upturn in form.

Town go into tomorrow's game unbeaten in four which has helped calm any relegation fears that were building in West Yorkshire.

Unsurprisingly for a side that has suffered so much with injuries this season, Huddersfield have used the second-most players in the league (35) and only eight players have started more than 16 games for them this term.

THE MANAGER

After retiring aged 23 to pursue his coaching career, Corberan began as a fitness coach with Villarreal CF, working with their C and B teams before joining the first team staff in 2011. He had two spells as a coach in the middle-East, either side of a six-month stint in charge of Alcorcon's youth team, before landing his first senior management job with Cypriot top flight side Doxa in November 2016. He lasted just two months but did enjoy more success during his subsequent spell with Ermis, guiding them to seventh. The following summer he was named as Head Coach of Leeds United's Under-23s, combining that with a First Team role when Marcello Bielsa was appointed in the summer of 2018.

TEAM NEWS

It's as you were for The Bees with Rico Henry (hamstring), Josh Dasilva (hip), Shandon Baptiste (knee), and Luka Racic (back) not in contention for tomorrow's game.

As mentioned, Huddersfield's injury issues are letting up but they are still without a number of key players. Captain Christopher Schindler (knee), Danny Grant (hamstring), Harry Toffolo (back), and Oumar Niasse (groin) are all out. Carel Eiting (knee) and Josh Koroma (hamstring) are back in training but tomorrow's game will come too soon for them. The positive news for Terriers fans is that Rolando Aarons is in contention to play following a hamstring injury while Pipa and Junior Bacuna returned unscathed from international duty this week.
