Get to Know: Ivan Toney

Ten things you need to know about our new man

2 September 2020

Ivan Toney became our second summer addition, joining from Peterborough United yesterday. Get to know more about our new man

  • Ivan has two sisters and two half-brothers. His family go to every match they can, once travelling from Northampton to Plymouth for a match which saw Ivan remain an unused substitute. Away from football, Ivan has recently taken up golf.
  • At 16 years, seven months, and 29 days, Ivan is Northampton’s youngest ever player; this appearance coming in an FA Cup First Round defeat to Bradford City in November 2012.
  • The day after that professional debut, Ivan returned to Northampton’s youth team, scoring four goals in a 5-0 FA Youth Cup win over York City.
  • Ivan’s first three professional goals came as Town pulled off a miraculous relegation escape at the end of the 2013/14 season. Six points adrift in January, his double against against Dagenham and Redbridge on the penultimate day, which included a spectacular overhead kick, lifted Chris Wilder’s side out of the bottom two for the first time since September. He then netted on the final day against Oxford United as Town confirmed their league status with a 3-1 win.

  • Ten goals and four assists the following season brought Ivan a move to the Premier League and Newcastle at the age of 19. All four of his Newcastle appearances came as a teenager during his debut campaign.
  • Ivan won his first silverware during a loan spell with Barnsley at the end of the 2015/16 season. That EFL Trophy success at Wembley was The Tykes first major trophy in 104 years. A month later he was celebrating at Wembley again as Barnsley beat Millwall in the Sky Bet League One Play-Off Final.

  • He would reach the League One Play-Offs on loan with Scunthorpe United each of the next two seasons as well. While with The Iron, Ivan played with his now Brentford teammates Luke Daniels and Charlie Goode.
  • Ivan has a League One winners medal to his name following a 24-game spell at Wigan during the first half of the 2017/18 season.
  • After three years in the North East, which included five loan spells in League One, Ivan joined Peterborough permanently in August 2018. Ten goals, including two hat-tricks, in eight December games set him on his way to 23 goals and eight assists in all competitions.
  • Ivan is the current Sky Bet League One Player of the Year and League One top scorer. Last season’s 26 goals left Toney one shy of a half-century in Peterborough colours from just 94 outings, and three away from a hundred in 277 career games.
