“I look at what I can actually affect”

In depth interview with Thomas Frank in Daily Telegraph

20 September 2020

For Thomas Frank, the rational thing to do is to pack up all of the pain and frustration of Brentford’s Play-Off Final defeat and, in his own words, put it to one side. “I look at what I can actually affect,” he says. “Of course I am disappointed in the moment, but then I go again. It is extremely important to have that skillset as a manager or else you can dwell too long, and that is going to drain you of energy.”

That is the first paragraph in an in-depth interview with Thomas Frank, who spoke to Sam Dean, of The Daily Telegraph, earlier this week. Thomas looked back at the end of last season, when The Bees missed out on promotion, and ahead to the coming season. He spoke ahead of Brentford's 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town yesterday.

Thomas also outlined his career to date and how close he came to leaving the game. The piece can be read in full here. It was also in yesterday's newspaper.

Meanwhile, Sergi Canós spoke to The Time this week. He walked around our new home with Tom Roddy, explaining what it was like to score the first goal in the stadium, in a pre-season friendly against Oxford United. Sergi also reflected on the last days at Griffin Park, where Bentford played for 116 years before leaving this summer.

The piece starts as follows......

When Sergi Canos stepped into Brentford’s new state-of-the-art stadium for the first time this summer he found a row of fold-up chairs laid out across the pitch. It was July 23 and manager Thomas Frank had arranged a team trip to the club’s new home having seen their automatic promotion hopes dashed the day before.

“We had lost to Barnsley and missed the opportunity to go straight up,” says Canos, sat in one of the 17,500 multicoloured seats. “We had a tour round the stadium and then they showed a video on the big screen to cheer us up before the play-offs. It was a reminder of everything we had achieved this year.”
