There was more international action for our players last night on the opening weekend of Nations League matches.
Pontus Jansson played the full 90 minutes as Sweden's Nations League A3 campaign began with a 1-0 defeat at home to World Champions France. Kylian Mbappe squeezed home the only goal four minutes before the break at the Friends Arena. The cap was Pontus’ 24th for his nation with a game against Portugal up next in the Nations League on Tuesday.
In Copenhagen, neither Henrik Dalsgaard nor Christian Norgaard featured as Denmark were beaten 2-0 by Belgium in their Nations League A2 opener. Jason Denayer poked home from a corner after eight minutes with Dries Mertens doubling the lead with a quarter of an hour remaining, side-footing in from close range. On Tuesday, Gareth Southgate’s England head to the Telia Parken in the Nations League.
On Friday, Patrik Gunnarsson kept a clean sheet on his eighth appearance for Iceland’s Under-21s as they beat Sweden 1-0 in UEFA Under-21 European Championship qualifying. Sveinn Aron Guðjohnsen netted the only goal 25 minutes from time, shortly after The Swedes had been reduced to ten men. The win keeps Iceland third in Group A, four points behind leaders Ireland but with a game in hand.
