Match Report and Match Highlights: Aldershot Town 3 Brentford B 2

Young Bees beaten on the road

11 October 2020

Brentford B fell to a 3-2 defeat away from home at Aldershot Town in a behind closed doors friendly.

Two goals from Mo Bettamer and one from Alfy Whittingham gave the hosts the win whilst a Trialist and Aaron Pressley got the Brentford goals.

Neil MacFarlane had new First Team recruit Vitaly Janelt involved from the start with the German getting his first taste of action since joining the Club. The game would come too soon, though, for new Brentford B arrivals Lachlan Brook and Valgeir Valgerisson who watched from the stands.

It was the worst possible start for the young Bees when Aldershot went ahead after a long ball over the top from the keeper caught out the Brentford back line before Bettamer chipped Thompson from the edge of the area.

The hosts looked the more likely throughout the first 20 minutes or so with Brentford B forced to defend as the central defenders were kept busy. However, they began to see more of the ball and threatened on 24 minutes when one of the Trialists gained possession out on the right before thumping an effort which just evaded to the top left-hand corner.

That seemed to give the young Bees confidence as the same Trialist beat his man before threading a good ball into the path of Pressley, but credit to the Aldershot keeper, who was quick off his line to deny the forward as he blocked well.

Pressley would have another attempt shortly after when Brentford broke on the counter-attack and as the forward made a run into the right channel he opted to try and catch the keeper out with a chipped effort from distance but it edged just over.

The side were then dealt a killer blow, despite being on top and wrestling some control in the game, when Bettamer received the ball from distance and sent a thunderous effort towards goal which caught out Thompson as it found the top corner as The Shots took a two-goal advantage into the break.

Brentford B began the second period well, though, and it took them just five minutes to pull a goal back. Fredrik Hammar did well to win possession in the middle of the park before he played the ball out to the right to one of the Trialists. A low cross was attacked by Pressley and Hammar before the other Trialist popped up to slot home.

A left off for The Bees then saw Harrison Panayiotou slide home to finish but the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up to the goal.

Brentford continued to press for another goal, though, and Alex Gilbert had two chances in quick succession when he struck powerfully before his attempt was well saved, and then his header was again kept out by The Shots’ keeper.

Brentford then had the chance to level from the spot when a handball gave a penalty to Pressley, but he was unable to convert as Ryan Hall saved.

The Bees would be made to rue those misses when the hosts netted a third of the afternoon when a low cross from the right found Alfy Whittingham unmarked before he headed past Simon Andersson from close range.

They had the chance to make it 4-1 shortly after when Aldershot were awarded a penalty themselves, but Ross McCormack could only slot his effort against the post on 68 minutes after Ben Hockenhull was adjudged to have fouled in the box.

With the score at 3-1, Brentford B were determined to register another and they did when Pressley did well to retain the ball in the box following a cross as he fired home off the post to make it 3-2 with five minutes to play. They were unable to create another clear cut opportunity as Aldershot claimed the win.
