Halil Dervişoğlu joins FC Twente on loan

Turkey Under-21 striker heads to Netherlands for the season

6 October 2020

Brentford’s Turkey under-21 international striker Halil Dervişoğlu has joined FC Twente on loan. The 20-year-old joined The Bees at the start of 2020 from Sparta Rotterdam and will now head back to The Netherlands for the 2020/21 season. He completed a move to Twente to play in the Eredivisie, the Dutch top tier, earlier today, Tuesday 6 October, and will spend the year with side that sit sixth in the early table, having won two and drawn two of their first four games.

Halil moved to West London at the start of the year in a move that was announced in August 2019. He made seven appearances for The Bees last season, starting in two Emirates FA Cup ties against Stoke City and Leicester City but was largely a substitute behind a Brentford front three that scored 57 Sky Bet Championship goals. He played for The Bees in the EFL Cup win at Southampton but has again found the competition stiff as Ivan Toney and Marcus Forss have already scored six goals between them in just eight games playing in the central striking role that Halil is challenging for.

Thomas Frank, Brentford FC Head Coach, said: "Halil is a young player that we have a lot of belief in and one we think has a big future at Brentford but he is at the stage of his career where he needs to play First Team matches. The competition for him with Ivan Toney and Marcus Forss is very strong. It is important for him to go out and play minutes to get up to top speed. When we send players out we see them coming back stronger like Marcus, Mads Bech Sørensen, and Emiliano Marcondes have in the past. We think Halil can do the same.”

Halil worked his way through the youth ranks at Sparta, playing predominantly as a centre forward and progressing to the First Team. He played for Jong Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch third tier and scored 21 goals in 28 games in the 2017/18 season. He moved in to the main group and scored ten times in 34 games in the second tier, plus one more as he helped Sparta win promotion via the Play-Offs.

Halil adapted quickly to Eredivisie football and contributed five goals and three assists in 17 league outings before moving to Brentford. Halil has also been a regular for Turkey’s Under-21s, earning eight caps at that level and scoring twice. He has also represented his country at Under-19 level and has won ten caps in total.
