Young Bees edge friendly at Jersey Road

2 November 2020

Brentford B battled to a 1-0 win at Jersey Road against National League side Aldershot Town in a behind closed doors friendly this afternoon.

It was a Brentford Trialist who got the all-important goal 10 minutes from time when he headed home from Aaron Pressley’s cross to make it two wins from two for the young Bees.

Neil MacFarlane made one change from the side that started the win over Hendon recently as Fredrik Hammar came into the starting XI. The young Bees started the game brightly and had a good chance when Valgeir Valgeirsson cut the ball back into the path of Alex Gilbert to curl an effort goalwards from just inside the box which the Shots keeper was equal to.

Following that, both sides enjoyed periods of possession, but neither were able to create that clear cut chance to go ahead with both defences on top- particularly the Brentford back three of Ben Hockenhull, Kane O’Connor and Tristan Crama- who had a solid display for much of the afternoon.

An opportunity did fall for The Bees on 26 minutes when they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Town area. After Valgeirsson had got the wrong side of his man he was brought down, and Gilbert stepped up to take the set piece, but his shot curled just over.

After the half hour mark the away side began to threaten more when a Town Trialist popped up at the back post on two occasions, forcing Balcombe into a couple of smart stops down to his left.

The Bees would have the final attempt of the first period when good interplay between Aaron Pressley and Valgeirsson saw the ball fall to the latter who hit the post with a clever effort, nonetheless the young Icelandic forward was adjudged to have been offside.

Brentford B were forced into a change just eight minutes after the break when Kane O’Connor picked up an injury following a sliding challenge from one of the Town players, as Aubrel Koutsimouka replaced him to continue the resolute defensive display.

Just before the hour mark young right back Fin Stevens had a chance at the far post after Pressley’s good hold up play found Joe Adams who crossed well, but the 17-year-old shot just wide of goal.

Similar to the first half, both sides had to battle to create chances, and they became scarcer as the second period continued. Pressley had a sight of goal when he received it centrally and worked himself some space, but the youngster miscued as the keeper collected the ball low.

The away side were unable to create many real clear-cut chances, apart from a couple of headers which failed to threaten Balcombe’s goal with the young Bees making it hard for the side to get close.

The winner did come, though, as The Bees worked it well and the tireless Pressley, who once again put in quite a shift up top, ran the channel to deliver an expert cross to the far post which the Trialist just had to connect with cleanly, which he did, as the side claimed a 1-0 victory.
