Development Team draw as Women's season goes into shutdown

The action for our women last weekend

22 March 2020

A much depleted fixture program saw the First Team match against Dulwich Hamlet Reserves postponed last Sunday but the Development Team were able to fulfil their fixture at Actonians Development in Division Three of the Greater London Women’s Football League.

With a strong wind blowing and a very uneven and narrow pitch, this was a competitive game full of action and chances, even if the conditions meant the quality was often lacking.

Brentford kicked off with the wind behind them and played down the slope in the first half. The visitors created a hatful of chances but were only able to convert one, which was forced in by Aliyah Anderson. As the half time whistle blew it looked that this one goal might not be enough despite a dominant first half. And so it proved as Actonians came out for the second half very much in charge.

Long spells of pressure from the home side stopped the attacking play the Bees had displayed in the first half. It was inevitable the hosts would score, and they did twice in quick succession through the lively Sharon Odofin. Some last ditch defending and fine shot stopping by Mia Heljeberg kept the score at 2-1. It could have been much worse had Odofin not hit the woodwork from a penalty.

This spurred the Brentford team on, and a superb strike by Kasey Clifford from the halfway line found the back of the net. After that The Bees managed to see the game out and earn a valuable point from a 2-2 draw.

As with all other recreational football, the women's season is now in suspension due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
