Brentford FC seeking Tactical Statistician

Role available within Data and Research department at Jersey Road

Brentford FC is seeking to recruit a Tactical Statistician to join the Data and Research department at the Club's Jersey Road Training Ground.

Reporting to the co-Directors of Football the purpose of the role is:

  • To obtain, interpret and provide feedback on statistical analysis and research for the Club
  • To translate complex analysis and research into a digestible form suitable for use in the coaching and training of footballers
  • To ensure analysis and research is provided to coaches on time and with a very high degree of accuracy


  • Develop (or use third party resources to develop) novel statistical or mathematical methods for football, as directed by the requirements of the Club clients and following a rigorous scientific approach: formulate hypothesis, test assumptions, validate model, and test the predictive utility comparing diagnostics across models.
  • Write (or use third parties to develop) regular reports on modelling ideas and model performance as required by the Football Department
  • Build new tactical methods or models with the Football Department from the applicable research.
  • Attend conferences or seminars and to report on findings in order to improve the Club’s knowledge of competitor activity and of other sports using data and analysis to improve tactics.


  • Minimum first degree in a subject requiring numeracy or with modules of statistics or mathematics.
  • A coaching qualification is preferrable




Strong numeracy and attention to detail

The club currently has very varied knowledge of European football, so detailed knowledge and experience in other regions of football would be preferred

Previous experience in developing sports methods using data and or analysing and applying sports data (ideally in football).


Experience of having applied knowledge directly to sports professionals (players and coaches)


Preferable to have experience of applying tactical knowledge to open play and set pieces in football

An ability to generate ideas and to test and develop those ideas through to completion


Good communication skills to be able to collaborate effectively with statisticians and with coaches and/or footballers, communicating often complex theoretical ideas to clients who are often non-mathematical in a non-mathematical way


Passion for and detailed knowledge of the tactics of football.
