Brentford have completed the signing of 24-year-old Oxford United attacker Tariqe Fosu for an undisclosed fee. The left-sided player signed a three-and-a-half-year contract earlier today, Friday 31 January, with the option of a further year, keeping him at Griffin Park until at least the summer of 2023.
Brentford FC Head Coach, Thomas Frank, said: “I am happy that we have managed to add Tariqe to our squad. He is a very good option to play in our front three. He is very good in one-on-one situations with good skill in tight areas and is a tricky player for defenders to deal with. He is also quick and will bring us goals and assists. We are looking forward to having him in our squad and to seeing him perform in the Championship.”
Brentford FC co-Director of Football, Phil Giles, said: "We spent a lot of time watching Tariqe while he was at Charlton and many of the reports we had on him were very strong. He continued that form in his short time with Oxford. Despite not acting earlier, we are pleased to have finally had the opportunity to bring him to Brentford. On behalf of everyone at the Club I wish him every success with us."
Tariqe joined Reading’s Academy as a nine-year-old and was part of the side which lifted the 2013/14 Premier League Cup. He progressed through the ranks to make his professional debut on the final day of the 2014/15 season. That appearance during a 3-0 win over Derby County, a result which helped ensure our finish in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs, would turn out to be Fosu’s only professional appearance for The Royals.
Then 19, Wandsworth-born Fosu signed a new two-year contract the following summer before embarking on a number of loan spells. He netted his first senior goal during a six-game spell in Sky Bet League One with Fleetwood Town before scoring three goals in eight games for Accrington Stanley, picking up the League Two Player of the Month award for April along the way.
He spent the 2016/17 season on loan with Colchester United, netting six goals in 34 games in all competitions, before joining Charlton Athletic on a two-year deal in the summer of 2017. The former England youth international scored nine goals during his maiden season at The Valley, which included a perfect hat-trick during a 4-0 win over Fleetwood Town. Last season, he made 27 league appearances as part of the Charlton squad which won promotion back to the Championship, scoring twice.
Fosu went on to join Oxford United in the summer and netted on his debut against Sunderland. He followed that up with a hat-trick during a 6-0 win over Lincoln City in September. That treble was the start of a profitable spell for Fosu. He netted in four of his next six matches, including one of the four that Oxford put past West Ham United in the Carabao Cup, being named the PFA Player of the Month for October along the way. His tenth and final goal for Oxford came just under a fortnight ago away at Gillingham.
