Goalkeepers sit on bench in international wins

Patrik and Simon miss out on game time

16 January 2020

Two Brentford goalkeepers will have to wait to add to their international experience after sitting out games yesterday. Patrik Gunnarsson is away with the full Iceland squad while Simon Andersson was part of a Sweden Under19/20 group in Cyprus. Both teams played games yesterday but neither Brentford player was involved.

Patrik sat on the bench as Iceland beat Canada 1-0 in the United States of America. The only goal was scored by Holmar Örn Eyjolfsson in the first half. It was the first time in an Icelandic matchday squad for Patrik and he could get a chance when Iceland face El Salvador on Sunday, 19 January, in another full international friendly. He is one of three goalkeepers in a 23-man squad.

Patrik has been first choice for Iceland Under-21 over the past season. He made his debut at that level last season and has now won seven caps at that level. He also represented his country at Under-17 level when he was just 15. Patrik has played 21 games for Iceland at all levels and will hope to add to that this week.

The Swedish team recorded a 7-0 win over Anorthosis Famagusta, a Cypriot club side and Simon was not involved in the game. Simon will now return to the Brentford B set up as Neil MacFarlane’s side head to Portugal this weekend. The teenage goalkeeper joined Brentford in the summer of 2018 from Halmstads Bollklub and he has been a consistent figure within Sweden’s youth setup for a number of seasons, playing 23 international games at Under-17 and Under-19 level.
