Nine to go as Marcus performs countdown

In to single figures on the Farewell Griffin Park countdown board

6 February 2020

Newly appointed Club Ambassador Marcus Gayle was the latest to perform the Griffin Park Countdown. At every home league match in 2019/20 we are counting down to the final game at Griffin Park. This will include using a special display which will be updated at each remaining league match. The Farewell Griffin Park countdown was changed to nine by Marcus when The Bees played Nottingham Forest last week.

Marcus Gayle was named as a Club Ambassador in late January. The former player started his career at Brentford as an 18-year-old. He made his debut in 1988 and played just short of 200 games before joining Wimbledon in 1994. After a spell with The Dons and then at Rangers and Watford, Marcus returned to Brentford in 2005 to extend his appearance tally to 231.

He came in to the First Team reckoning as a winger and established himself under Phil Holder as The Bees won promotion as Barclays Division Three champions in 1992 a year after reaching the Play-Offs. After returning, he was part of the Brentford squad that reached the third tier Play-Offs in both 2005 and 2006. The Jamaican international – Marcus earned 18 caps, scored three goals and played at the 1998 World Cup – ended his Brentford career in 2006.

Marcus is a member of the Club’s Hall of Fame and is a regular co-commentator on matchdays at Griffin Park. Marcus works with Kick it Out and the Premier League to deliver their Equality Inspires workshops across the country for players, staff and parents. He is also an Ambassador for KickOff@3, an initiative set up to engage young people, using sport, music and other imaginative ideas to spread awareness and raise funds for a range of charities that promote health and well-being in young people.
