Woody features on Football Focus

Chance to watch piece on young fan on BBC

4 December 2020

The long-awaited return of fans to football matches happened this week. After Government approval following a reduction in Covid-19 cases, fans were allowed to attend games from Wednesday, 2 December, in certain parts of the country. For the first time since 7 March - and the first time ever at our new stadium - Brentford will play in front of supporteres tomorrow, Saturday 5 December, when we host Blackburn Rovers.

Supporters returning to games was a topic on the BBC magazine show Football Focus last Saturday and there was a special Brentford interest. Suppporters from up and down the country outlined how the lack of fans attending games had affecting them. And Brentford fan Woody was one of those featured.

Woody has Down Syndrome and a very limited vocabulary. He communicates through sign language and his beaming smile and became a regular in our last years at Griffin Park. We told his story in full on World Down Syndrome Day in 2019 and you can see that here.

The BBC spoke to Woody's Mum Natalie about how not attending games had affected him. The piece ran on Football Focus last Saturday. It can be seen here but hurry, it is only available until tomorrow, Saturday.
