Carabao Cup action for The Bees on Tuesday night

20 December 2020

Brentford extended their unbeaten run to 13 games yesterday but now put their Sky Bet Championship season on hold for a week. The Bees beat Reading 3-1 yesterday and now sit fourth in the Championship table. But next on the agenda is a first ever Carabao Cup Quarter Final tie, against Newcastle United.

The Bees reached this stage for the first time ever with four wins in just over four weeks in the autumn. A penalty shoot-out win over Wycombe Wanderers was followed by a 2-0 victory at Southampton. West Bromwich Albion were beaten next, again on penalties, before Fulham were dismantled at the start of October. That put The Bees in the last eight and set up a game against Newcastle on Tuesday, 22 December, that will kick-off at 5.30pm.

Newcastle come in to the game after a 1-1 draw with ten-man Fulham on Saturday night. They have won five and lost five of the Premier League games this season and sit in mid-table. They reached this stage of the Carabao Cup with wins over Blackburn Rovers, Morecambe and, after a penalty shoot-out, Newport County.

The Magpies have won two and lost one of their last four games. They won on their last trip to London, at Crystal Palace, but that was their first win in the league away from home since September. They did win on their last trip to Brentford, in January 2017. Brentford have won just three of 11 meetings against Newcastle going back more than 85 years.

Tuesday's match will, unfortunately, be behind closed doors. It will, however, be available live on Sky Sports. As per the EFL communication on the broadcast arrangements for the new season, all Carabao Cup ties that are selected for live coverage by Sky Sports will only be available on that platform.
