Local councillor shares his Griffin Park memories

Mel Collins interviewed by My London

7 August 2020

“So many wonderful memories of Griffin Park and Brentford, home and away," said Mel Collins, talking about his life as a Bees fan. "I have been all over the country with the Bees including the Millennium and Wembley.”

Mel, a local councillor, was talking to My London this week. He discussed his memories of Griffin Park as the Club prepares to move to a new stadium and his life as a blind football fan. He recalls his first game and talks about Brentford being only the second club in the country to create a commentary scheme for blind supporters.

That commentary scheme still runs to this day, albeit blind fans now get the same audio commentary created for iFollow Brentford, the Club's audio and video match coverage, and Mel is still a regular listener. He told My London about listening to games in recent weeks on the radio but, as a local resident, being able to sit in his garden to hear the noise from Griffin Park. Although he admits it is not the same as being there.

The interview with Mel was conducted before Brentford played Fulham in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final. You can read it here.
