Luka Racic will spend the 2020/21 season on loan with Sky Bet League One side Northampton Town. The defender joined up with Keith Curle’s newly-promoted Cobblers earlier today, Friday 21 August, ahead of the new campaign.
Brentford FC Head Coach, Thomas Frank, said: “We’re very pleased that Luka has this opportunity to go out on loan to Northampton Town and play matches at a high level. League One is a fantastic place for young players to play as it has the same competitive edge as the Championship. It is crucial for Luka at this stage of his development that he plays matches and the best way for him to do that currently is on loan. We have massive belief in Luka; we’ve shown that over the past 18 months with his gametime at the end of the 2018/19 season and then last season’s appearances in league and cup competitions. We wish him all the best for his time at Northampton”
Luka joined Brentford in the summer of 2018, signing for Brentford B from FC Copenhagen. The Danish youth international quickly established himself in West London and was given a squad number after just six months. Then 19, his maiden matchday call-up was for an Emirates FA Cup tie against Oxford United before he made his professional debut as a substitute against Millwall last April. He started for the first time on the final day of the 2018/19 season against Preston North End.
After four further appearances at the start of last term, Luka penned a new long-term contract in November and was officially promoted to the first-team group. The 21-year-old returned from injury to play three times at the start of 2020, netting his first senior goal during a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City in February.
