Birthdays

Albert ‘Jackie’ Gibbons (1914): 71 games, 19 goals

South-African born Gibbons is one of the small band of people to have both played for and managed Brentford. Another to see his best years destroyed by war, Jackie made 11 First Division appearances in West London before hostilities. Following a year with Bradford Park Avenue, Gibbons returned to Brentford in 1947 for a Club record fee of £8000. His 13 strikes during the 47-48 season saw him end the campaign as top scorer.

Gibbons retired in February 1949 to replace the legendary Harry Curtis as manager. The following month, he brought former Bradford Park Avenue teammate and future England manager Ron Greenwood to the club. Under Gibbons we made three consecutive top ten finishes in the Second Division. A falling out with star wing halves Jimmy Hill and Greenwood towards the end of 1951 saw form tail off, with our subsequent 10th place finish, after challenging for promotion in mid-season, prompting Gibbons to resign the following August.

Sidney Tickridge (1923); 67 games, 0 goals

A full-back with Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, Tickridge was 32 by the time he arrived at Griffin Park. He was immediately named Club Captain under Bill Dodgin Sr and made 41 appearances as we finished 6th in Division Three South during the 1955/56 season. He played a further 26 games the following campaign before departing midway through the season.

Steve Claridge (1966): 4 games, 0 goals

Much-travelled Claridge arrived on a free in December 2004 but only managed four scoreless games before Martin Allen loaned him to Wycombe Wanderers the following month.
