In a meeting between two of the Eredivisie's top four, it was last season's Champions League finalists who took control with two goals in five minutes midway through the first-half; Quincy Promes and Hakim Ziyech the men on target. Any hope of a second-half Sparta comeback were dashed as Dusan Tadic made it 3-0 from the penalty spot with Ziyech grabbing his second on the hour. Halil did give the Sparta fans something to cheer about with his late consolation tap in. The 19-year-old now has two goals and two assists to his name in five league outings.

Back in England, Canice Carroll returned to the Carlisle United starting line-up as they won 1-0 away at struggling Scunthorpe United. The only goal came on the hour, four minutes after Canice was withdrawn, as Ryan Loft fired home from the edge of the box. The victory, Carlisle's second of the season, sees them move up to 18th in Sky Bet League Two.

In the National League, Justin Shaibu played the final few minutes of Boreham Wood's 3-1 win on the road at Chorley. The game between two early strugglers was settled in 16 minutes either side of the interval; Tyrone Marsh, David Stephen, and a Matt Challenor own-goal proving decisive. Chris Holroyd pulled one back from the spot for the hosts late on but victory sees Wood rise to 17th in the table.
