Kamohelo Mokotjo has been named in Molefi Ntseki’s first South Africa squad for the annual Nelson Mandela Challenge against Mali in Port Elizabeth on 13 October.

Bafana Bafana’s opponents were confirmed on Wednesday, following a challenging September for the nation in which a friendly in Zambia on 7 September was cancelled due to safety concerns, before Madagascar pulled out of a hastily-arranged replacement days later. Around the same time, xenophobic riots broke out in South Africa, leading to the difficulty in arranging next month’s fixture.

The game is the first outing since the 2019 African Cup of Nations, where South Africa lost 2-1 to Nigeria at the quarter-final stage. Kamohelo played 90 minutes in four of their five matches in the competition and will now be looking to add to his 20 caps against ‘The Eagles’ next month, 13 of which have been earned while he has been at Brentford. The 28-year-old has played four times for the Bees in the Sky Bet Championship so far this season, though each one has come from the substitutes bench.
