Patrik Gunnarsson has been named in the Iceland Under-21 squad for the European Championship qualifiers with Sweden and the Republic of Ireland. On Saturday 12 October, Iceland face the Swedes in Helsingborg at 2.45pm and then return to home soil when they host Group One leaders the Republic of Ireland.

Arnar Viðarsson’s young squad – known as ‘Strákarnir okkar’ – have started their qualifying campaign in fine form, having beaten Luxembourg 3-0 and thumped Armenia 6-1 in early September, leaving them second only to the Republic of Ireland, who have played a game more. The group winners will qualify for the tournament along with the best second-placed team in nine groups. Eight other runners-up will take part in Play-Off games.

Patrik – who signed a long-term deal at the club earlier in the summer - made his Iceland Under-21 debut last season and has won four caps at that level. He has been part of the national set-up since 2016 and represented his country at Under-17 level when he was just 15. He has played 18 games for Iceland in total and was called up to train with the full national squad last year.
