One of the highlights of our season-long Farewell Griffin Park celebration is now upon us. To begin, let’s wind back almost 115 years… It’s 22 October 1904 and Millwall Athletic are the visitors to West London.
Brentford have played three times at their new Griffin Park home in the Southern League First Division but have yet to win. A great crowd, numbering more than 10,000, assemble for the contest. Brentford win the toss and have the advantage of playing with a dazzling sun at their backs.
A rapid game sees The B’s victorious for the first time at Griffin Park. The match is won and lost in the first five minutes of play; Fred Hobson, re-appearing at centre-forward, responsible for the only two goals scored.
After this, to quote Sporting Life’s report published two days after the fixture, “There was not a deal of difference between the two teams, although Millwall were decidedly ragged at times, and their forward play was, generally speaking, inferior to Brentford, who showed improved form, which was very gratifying to their supporters.”
Almost 115 years on - as we celebrate our final season at Griffin Park - we will mark our first-ever victory at our famous old stadium by donning a 1904-inspired third kit against Millwall on 19 October. Produced by Technical Supplier, Umbro, this commemorative jersey features a stylized crew neckline in spun poly fabric with printed tonal blue stripe, a gold woven crest and ‘Farewell Griffin Park’ back neck sign-off. The kit was commissioned to mark our Farewell Griffin Park season, presented by London Pride, and is being released especially for this anniversary.
EcoWorld London, our Principal Partners, have agreed to remove their logo from the replica versions, which are on sale now for fans to buy. The Club would like to thank EcoWorld London for their support of our Farewell Griffin Park season and for allowing sponsor-free replica shirts to be produced, as well as Millwall, who will be wearing a different kit rather than their traditional blue for the fixture.
The shirts are available at the Club Shop for £60*, with the first 400 purchasers receiving theirs in a limited-edition box. Don’t miss out, purchase yours online today.
On 19 October, our playing shirts will feature a gold EcoWorld London logo and be paired with white shorts and navy socks. Join us next week to help The Bees get bragging rights over our London rivals as they did 115 years ago. Tickets for our home game against Millwall are available to previous ticket purchasers, so book yours now.
