Match Preview: Brentford B v Reading under-23s

A look ahead to Wednesday evening's match at Griffin Park.

23 October 2019

Brentford B will be in Griffin Park action this evening when they welcome Reading Under-23s in a 7:30pm kick off.

The match gives Neil MacFarlane’s side the opportunity to turn out in a stadium environment, continue their development, as well as allow Bees’ fans to take a look at how the team are developing.

The match is free of charge for supporters to come and watch with Braemar Road access available for spectators.

Having found the net eight times in their previous match with FFDTV Academy, Brentford B will go into the game confident, especially after some positive performances prior to the international break against Aberdeen and Hibernian’s Reserve sides.

Ahead of the match, Brentford B coach Sam Saunders said: “It’s a good game, a stadium game is always good under the lights at Griffin Park and there’s not too many of them left unfortunately.

“It will be good to get back there and hopefully we can get a few through the doors. They’re good games, it’s not like an academy game where we’ll let teams have the ball and then we have the ball, we like to get at teams and play entertaining football on the front foot. If they (the supporters) come down on Wednesday night, then I’m sure they will have something to smile about.”

Brentford B’s last match at Griffin Park saw them fall to a narrow defeat against Luton Town with Callum McManaman’s penalty the only difference between the two sides.

August 2019 also saw the young Bees hold West Ham United’s Under-23s to a 2-2 draw in an entertaining affair with Jaden Brissett and Jan Žambůrek netting for the home side.

The last time Brentford B took on Reading Under-23s was back in November 2018 at Jersey Road in which The Bees ran out 6-0 winners, and a couple of months before that it was Reading who came out on top in a 3-2 win.

Late September saw the young Bees secure a 6-0 win over Beckenham Town before they played out two matches in Scotland as they beat Aberdeen Reserves 3-1, and they then came out on the wrong side of an entertaining match with Hibernian Reserves in what was a 3-2 defeat. That was followed up by the stunning win over FFDTV Academy which has helped put them in good shape going into the match with the Royals.

Led by Scott Marshall, Reading Under-23s play in English Premier League 2 Division Two where they come up against sides of a similar age right across the country on a weekly basis.

They’ve had a somewhat mixed start to their 2019/20 season which began when they ran out 6-0 winners over Newcastle United on home turf. That was followed up by a couple of defeats to Manchester United and West Ham United before they secured a 5-0 win over Swansea City in September. Recent results have seen them lose out narrowly against Fulham as they were beaten 5-4 before they fell to a 4-0 defeat at home to Stoke City. Their last match saw them make the long trip to Middlesbrough, but they fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat.
