Brentford midfield player Jan Žambůrek and his Czech Republic team mates have made a fine start to their international week. Jan is with the Czech Under-19 squad for three games in six days. Those games are the first qualifiers for the UEFA European Under-19 Championships and the first of those against San Marino yesterday ended 6-0 the Czech’s favour.
Jan played the full game, which Czech Republic dominated from start to finish. They were 2-0 up after 16 minutes with their first two shots and that became 3-0 from the penalty spot 22 minutes in. Jan won another penalty, this time saved, and played the remainder of the one-sided contest to earn his third Under-19 cap to go with 36 at lower levels.
Czech Republic will have two more games to try and reach the next stage. They face Azerbaijan on Saturday and Norway next Tuesday. Norway won the game between those two teams 1-0 yesterday afternoon. The top two – as well as the best third-placed team from 13 groups – will progress to the next stage in March and the winners of seven groups of four in another six-day period will join hosts Northern Ireland in the finals next summer.
