Match Preview: Wigan Athletic vs Brentford

Everything you need to know before our visit to The DW

8 November 2019

The Bees try to make it four wins from five before the international break, while Wigan go in search of a first win in four. Here's the information you need before the trip to the North West.

  • Brentford have kept five clean sheets in their last six meetings with Wigan
  • Wigan have won seven of their last 11 home league matches against Brentford (W7 D3 L1)
  • Brentford have never completed a league double over Wigan
  • Brentford are one of the top three teams for most aerial duels won away from home this season
  • Ollie Watkins has contributed six of the 10 goals Brentford have scored away from home this season

For a first season back in the Championship, 2018-19 saw Wigan largely live up to expectations. They finished 18th in the division, and didn't get very far in either domestic cup competition. Consider their position in England's second tier consolodated.

This term didn't get off to the best start. An opening day win over newly relegated Cardiff City was followed up by four defeats at the end of August, leaving them in the bottom three above Stoke City and Huddersfield.

Similar to last season, they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the First Round, this time by The Potters. A run of three wins and three defeats saw the side climb to 18th but that's the highest they've been since October. Two defeats to Derby County and Swansea City were punctuated by a 2-2 draw with Bristol City, meaning The Latics have picked up four points from a possible 15 since the last international break.

Paul Cook led The Latics back to the Championship at the first time of asking last season, exactly a year after he lead Portsmouth to the League Two title. Before that, Cook was at the reins of Chesterfield when he also got them out of the fourth tier.

A man with a track record for building winning teams, Cook made nearly 650 league appearances during a 22-year playing career which included two spells with The Latics and stints at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City, and Burnley.

The Bees continue without Sergi Canos and Nikos Karelis, both missing with long-term knee injuries. Josh Clarke is a doubt for the weekend too. Mads Bech Sorensen and Luka Racic have stepped up their returns from injuries in recent weeks and could feature on Saturday.

Wigan will be without Josh Windass and Lee Evans, while it's expected that Michael Jacobs will return to the side in place of Gavin Massey. Fullback Tom Pearce is also a doubt but has been close to a return since Halloween.

The boss gives his thoughts on our final match before the November international break, as well as a nomination for Championship Manager of the Month.

Neither side could get the crucial breakthrough last season, The Bees travelling home with a point from a 0-0 draw in March 2019.
