Brentford B midfield player Jan Žambůrek helped his country to a draw thanks to a last-minute equaliser yesterday. Jan was named as a substitute for Czech Republic Under-18 in a match in Slovakia yesterday, Tuesday 21 May. Jan came on just past the hour mark with his team losing 1-0 to Croatia and they earned a point thanks to a last-gasp goal from Filip Firbacher.
Jan and his teammates are taking part in an eight-team tournament this week. The tournament will see Czech Republic Under-18 play three games in four days. They lost to Ukraine on Monday and are next in action against Spain on Thursday. There will then be another game to decide the final placings. The other group contains the hosts, England, Mexico and Russia.
Croatia took an early lead in yesterday’s game, which was between two teams that lost their opening fixtures. But the young Czech side continued to battle to the end and earned a late penalty that Firbacher converted. With Spain winning both their games, Jan and his teammates can finish second in their group at best and need to win their final game to do so.
Jan - who became the first player born after 2000 to make a professional appearance for The Bees when he came on against Hull City in February – earned his 12th Under-18 cap in the loss. He has played 35 matches in total for his country at youth level.
