The Opposition

Wigan come into this fixture hovering dangerously over the Sky Bet Championship's relegation places. 19th position with 39 points, they are just two ahead of Millwall and Reading and three above Rotherham United in 22nd.

The Latics have won only one of their previous eight games, that coming just before the international break against Bolton Wanderers. The 5-2 scoreline was the first time the team have scored over three goals in a game this season.

This term the squad were dumped out of both domestic cup competitions in the first round they entered. The Carabao Cup saw them lose 3-1 to Rotherham away from home, while losing 1-0 on the road to West Brom had them out of the FA Cup Third Round.

This season's top scorer is former Watford and Preston forward Joe Garner. The 30-year-old, who also had a recent spell at Rangers, has netted seven times this campaign.

Team News

In positive news for Athletic, Wigan's Danny Fox and Anthony Pilkington both returned to training over the international break. The rest of the squad seem to be in good condition.

For Brentford, Thomas Frank confimed that all of the side are now in training, making it a difficult decision to fill the squad this weekend. Some players like Daniel Bentley, Lewis Macleod and Rico Henry could miss out due to a lack of fitness following injuries but that's to be confirmed.

The Manager

Paul Cook led The Latics back to the Championship at the first time of asking last season, exactly a year after he lead Portsmouth to the League Two title. Before that, Cook was at the reins of Chesterfield when he also got them out of the fourth tier.

A man with a track record for building winning teams, Cook made nearly 650 league appearances during a 22-year playing career which included two spells with The Latics and stints at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City, and Burnley.
