Ezri Konsa watches on as England concede twice in late defeat

Young Lions start U21 Euros with defeat to France

19 June 2019

Ezri Konsa was an unused sub last night as two goals in the dying minutes made it a losing start to England's campaign at the Under-21 European Championships in Italy.

A superb individual goal from Phil Foden gave England a second-half lead in Cessena after Dean Henderson had saved an earlier French spot-kick. Les Bleus then missed another penalty after Hamza Choudhury was sent off for a rash challenge in the box.

However, Aidy Boothroyd's side's luck didn't hold as Jonathan Ikone drilled an 89th minute shot into the bottom corner before Aaron Wan-Bissaka sliced into his own net five minutes into stoppage time.

Opening night defeat means it will be an uphill battle for the Young Lions to progress. They take on Romania this Friday before facing Croatia on Monday knowing any more slip ups could prove fatal with only the group winners and one runner-up going through from the three groups.

Ezri's non-participation last night means he remains on six caps at Under-21 level, to add to a further five at Under-20 level.
