A penalty save from Ellery Balcombe could not prevent defeat for England last night that ended their hopes of winning the 2019 Maurice Revello Tournament, better known as the Toulon Tournament. England were beaten 3-2 by Portugal last night which, after defeat to Japan on Saturday, means they cannot reach the Semi-Finals. Having won the tournament three years in a row, England will not be making it four in 2019.

Brentford goalkeeper Ellery came on at half time with England 3-1 down after taking the lead early on. The Young Lions pulled a goal back and Ellery saved a penalty, below, to give his team chance of snatching a point. But Portugal held on to take the win.

Brentford midfield player Josh Dasilva is also in the squad but was an unused substitute. Both Bees will be hoping to feature in England’s last group game – against Chile on Friday. The Young Lions will play a further game to give them a final position in the tournament but cannot make the last four for a shot at the title.

Brentford B defender Canice Carroll is also in France with the Republic of Ireland squad for the event. The Irish team beat China in their first game on Monday. They play Mexico tomorrow and Bahrain on Sunday as they look to make the last four.
