Brentford were represented at the annual WorldNET football supporters competition at the weekend just gone, 6-7 July.
The tournament was held at the sports ground of Nottingham University and features supporters teams from all over the United Kingdom – from as far south as Portsmouth to the northern extremes of Aberdeen; the tournament even has an international dimension with a team representing the French team RC Lens. The Brentford team were in the Veterans competition, where the majority of players are aged 35+.
On day one a series of group games take place, each game lasting 30 minutes: the Bees recorded victories against Kidderminster Harriers 2-0; a 1-1 draw with Arsenal Nigeria and were defeated 1-0 by Portsmouth.
On day two the tournament goes straight to knock out and Brentford were defeated 3-0 by Bury in the last 16. The Bury defeat was a much narrower result than the scoreline suggests, with the Bees one goal down with a couple of minutes to go, and pushing up for an equaliser, leaving the gaps at the back and the team exposed to the counter-attack.
