Ten things you might not know about our new stopper

Spanish goalkeeper David Raya became our third summer signing as he arrived from Blackburn Rovers this morning for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old penned a four-year contract and joined up with the squad for our pre-season training camp in Austria. Get to know more about our new man below

  • David Raya Martin was born in Barcelona on 16 September 1995.
  • Despite being born in the Catalan capital, Raya, along with his dad and two brothers are lifelong Real Madrid fans. His idol is Iker Casillas
  • Raya comes from a family of jewellers, with two of his brothers owning rival firms back home.
  • David arrived in England at the age of 16 from the Barcelona based UE Cornella club, joining Blackburn in the summer of 2012.
  • His first senior appearances came in the National League with Southport during the 2014/15 season. The then 19-year-old kept six cleans sheets in 20 games for The Port.
  • Raya still rates his final game for Southport as his most memorable in football as he earned national acclaim for his performance during a 1-0 FA Cup Third Round defeat to Derby County; Chris Martin’s 90th minute penalty eventually sending The Rams through at Pride Park.
  • Raya also enjoyed a memorable Blackburn debut as Rovers beat Leeds United 3-0 at Ewood Park in April 2015.
  • Not one used to losing, Raya tasted defeat in just six of his first 64 league games for Rovers, missing just one game as they earned promotion from League One in May 2018 with 96 points. 
  • Away from football, Raya is a keen video gamer.
  • Raya’s Brentford debut will be his 99th game in the EFL as he averages a clean sheet every three matches.
