Report: Bedfont Sports 0-5 Brentford B

First preseason game ends in a win for the B Team

4 July 2019

Brentford B started their 2019/20 preseason fixtures with a convincing 5-0 win over Bedfont Sports in Feltham on Thursday night.

One of the trialists started the scoring in the first half, with Reece Cole adding one before the break. Joe Hardy netted a brace in the second period, Fredrik Hammar getting the fifth right before the final whistle.

The Bees could, and perhaps should, have scored in the first 20 seconds. A poor pas out from the back allowed Gustav Mogensen in on goal, the goalkeeper managing to throw himself in the way of the shot from close range.

After nine minutes, Jayden Onen chipped a ball over the top of the defence for Christian Tue Jensen to volley at goal. His effort dipped wide of the post.

Jensen was in again a few moments later, getting on the end of a header by Jaden Brissett in the box. This time the technique was clumsy and it flew over the crossbar.

With quarter of an hour gone, Bedfont made a chance at the other end. A neat run from the left wing ended inside the box for one of The Eagles' attackers but Kane O'Connor managed to do enough to stop the shot from hitting the target.

The first goal came exactly 17 minutes and 20 seconds into the new season. One trialist played the ball across the field to Brissett, who then touched it inside for another trialist to drill into the bottom left corner.

Mogensen and Jensen combined for what almost became an immediate second. The striker laid it back for his fellow Dane, only for the ball to be set back for a trialist to shoot it narrowly over the bar.

With 26 minutes gone, Cole got on the scoresheet. Another ball out of defence picked off by Brentford, Cole exchanged a neat pass with Mogensen before driving into the box. There, he took aim and fired low beyond the keeper to make it 2-0.

A few minutes later, another long range effort came from the home side. Nathan Shepperd watched on as the ball sailed over his crossbar.

Just before the break, Onen cut back on the edge of the box and struck the ball forcing the goalkeeper into a save. Brissett was on the follow-up but couldn't get a strike as the ball fizzed away.

At half-time, The Bees made nine changes. Simon Andersson swapped into goal, while new signing Julien Carre got his first chance to impress the coaching staff.

It didn't take long for Hardy to get back in the goals. The 20-year-old scored 29 for the team last season and grabbed his first for this campaign just four minutes after coming on. Matej Majka broke down the right, getting the ball inside to Fredrik Hammar. The Swedish midfielder knocked it out to Hardy and the striker drove it first-time into the bottom left corner.

After a few more minutes, a sloppy bit of passing from The Bees allowed Bedfont to break. The shot came at Andersson from distance, and it was an awkward one, forcing the keeper to parry it back into the box. It looked like the hosts might get one back but for a superb tackle by Jonny Mitchell.

With just under 20 minutes to go, Nick Tsaroulla was brought down by a trailing leg as he darted into the box. The referee pointed to the spot, Hardy stepping up to clip the ball into the bottom corner for his second of the evening.

A few minutes later, Brentford might have had a spectacular fifth. A corner by Ali Coote was sent over the far post and Mitchell caught it on the volley in the air. A Bedfont defender got himself in the way, much to the disappointment of the watching crowd.

At 78 minutes, Coote was denied by the save of the match. He shot from distance and, after appearing through a crowd of bodies, the ball was tipped on to the post by the keeper. Justin Shaibu then saw his follow-up blocked by a last-ditch tackle from a defender on the line.

The last goal finally came in the dying moments of the game. Coote slotted a pass to Majka on the right, he then clipped it towards Hammar in the middle and the 18-year-old poked it home from less than six yards out.
