Match Preview: AFC Wimbledon vs Brentford

All the details ahead of tonight's pre-season opener

5 July 2019

The new Sky Bet Championship season is just 29 days away as Thomas Frank's side play their first pre-season fixture tonight against Sky Bet League One side AFC Wimbledon. Below you will find all the match details ahead of our trip to the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

AFC Wimbledon vs Brentford

Cherry Red Records Stadium, Kick-off 7.45pm

THE OPPOSITION

Under former Brentford manager Wally Downes, The Dons put together a remarkable run of form to preserve their Sky Bet League One status on the final day of last season. Marooned at one stage ten points from safety, a run of just one loss in 12 games ensured a fourth successive season in the third tier.

THE BOSS

A club legend during his days with the Wimbledon Crazy Gang, Downes made more than 200 league appearances for The Dons before stepping into coaching at Crystal Palace under Steve Coppell in the early late 1980s. He spent 12 years at Palace before heading to Griffin Park as assistant manager in 2000. When Steve Coppell left in 2002, Downes was handed the top job. He guided a young Brentford side to 16th during his first season but was sacked in March 2004 with The Bees looking destined for relegation. Further coaching roles at Reading, Southampton, West Ham United, and Kerala Blasters followed before he was appointed Dons manager last December.
