Justin Shaibu celebrated his 21st birthday weekend by netting for the third time in four matches as Boreham Wood beat Bromley 2-1 at Meadow Park on Saturday.
The striker was restored to the National League starting line-up for the first-time in a month as Wood went looking to build on a three-match unbeaten run in league and cup. Things didn’t start well for Luke Garrard’s side as Omar Bugiel headed the visitors in front midway through the first-half. However, Justin equalised a minute before the interval, finding himself in just the right place to poke home from close range. The turnaround was complete on the hour as Gozie Ugwu was given the freedom of the six-yard box to head past David Gregory. The victory sent The Wood back into the top-half, seven points outside the Play-Offs, ahead of tomorrow night’s trip to Aldershot. Justin's goal can be seen below at 4:16 onwards.
In Sky Bet League One, Jack Bonham and Bristol Rovers suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat away at high-flying Barnsley. Jack had no chance with the game's only goal; Alex Mowatt curling superbly into the top corner after just 11 minutes. Both sides had chances after that, Jack in particular made one fine second-half save to deny George Moncur, but Rovers’ continued struggles in front of goal saw them slip to a defeat which leaves them 20th in the table. Darrell Clarke’s side head to the seaside next Saturday to take on Blackpool.
A division higher, Ryan Woods played 90 minutes for Stoke City on Saturday as they took all three points from their trip to Bristol City. The only goal arrived on the half-hour as Darren Fletcher took one touch to control on his chest before volleying home from ten yards. Those three points moved The Potters up to 13th in the table ahead of their televised game at home to Middlesbrough on Saturday evening.
In Sky Bet League Two, Theo Archibald came off the bench for his 11th Forest Green Rovers appearance on Saturday. Away at fellow promotion chasers Exeter City, for whom Chiedozie Ogbene missed out through injury, Reece Brown and Liam Shepherd struck after the break to put Rovers in control. Theo came on for the final 15 minutes as, despite a comical late goal for The Grecians, Forest Green held on for a huge three points which leave them sixth in the table. There’s another big game for the Green Devils next weekend as they head to top-of-the-table Lincoln City while Exeter visit Tranmere Rovers.
Elsewhere, Tom Field was an unused substitute as Cheltenham Town were beaten 2-0 at home to Stevenage. Both goals came in the first-half as The Robins remain 23rd in the table, without a win in eight league games. Michael Duff’s side take a break from league action tomorrow night when they host Arsenal Under-21s in the Checkatrade Trophy.
