There was game-time for five of our seven loan players over the weekend in the Sky Bet EFL and Vanarama National League.
After his move to Maidenhead United on Friday, Reece Cole was an unused substitute for The Magpies’ trip round the M25 to Sutton United. It was the visitors who picked up a vital three points in their battle for survival as Adam Clifton netted with six minutes to play to lift United out of the bottom four ahead of tomorrow night’s home game against Ebbsfleet United.
While there was late joy for one Bee in the National League, there was late disappointment for another as Justin Shaibu and Boreham Wood conceded twice in the dying minutes to fall to defeat at AFC Fylde. Gozie Ugwu had put The Wood in front in the second-half and they seemed set to hold onto the win. However, late goals from Danny Rowe and Serhat Tasdemi flipped the game on its head on the brink of injury time. Justin played the final quarter of an hour for Luke Garrard’s side who host Dover Athletic tomorrow night.
Back in the EFL, Ryan Woods played the full 90 minutes as Stoke City drew 2-2 at home to QPR on Saturday. Saido Berahino and Joe Allen netted either side of the interval as Stoke came from behind to lead late on. However, Angel Rangel, who had netted Rangers’ opener, struck with 12 minutes to play as the two sides had to settle for a draw. The Potters welcome Frank Lampard’s Derby County to the Bet 365 Stadium on Wednesday night.
There was a disappointing return to the capital for Jack Bonham on Saturday as Bristol Rovers were beaten 3-1 by Charlton Athletic at The Valley. Jamie Ward put The Addicks ahead after just ten minutes, but Rovers levelled through Joe Martin on the half-hour. Joe Aribo restored the hosts' advantage in first-half stoppage time before Karlan Grant made the game safe with almost the last kick of the game. Defeat sees The Gas remain in the bottom four with fellow strugglers Gillingham making the trip to The Memorial Stadium tomorrow night.
In Sky Bet League Two, Theo Archibald and Chiedozie Ogbene were second-half substitutes as Forest Green Rovers and Exeter City picked up points on the road. Theo played the final 15 minutes as Rovers returned victorious from their long-trip to Carlisle, Ben Morris and Carl Winchester with the goals in a 2-1 win, while Chiedozie and Exeter City drew 1-1 at fellow promotion chasers Colchester United. Also in the Fourth Tier, Tom Field was an unused substitute as Cheltenham Town’s mini-revival continued following a 2-1 win over Newport County.
All three will hope for further success tomorrow night as Forest Green host Colchester United, Exeter entertain rock-bottom Macclesfield Town, and Cheltenham visit Bury.
