Chiedozie Ogbene made his return from injury last night as Exeter City beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 in the Checkatrade Trophy.
The winger had missed the last month of action but started at St James Park for the visit from Darrell Clarke’s side. After a goalless opening 45 minutes, Chiedozie played a key part in The Grecians’ opening goal as he crossed in for Jonathan Forte to tap home. The 21-year-old was withdrawn on the hour with the hosts wrapping up the win nine minutes from time through Joel Randall.
The victory means Exeter top Group L with Rovers also heading through to the last 32. After missing Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup draw against Barnet, Jack Bonham, was not involved again in Rovers’ matchday 18. Both sides return to EFL action this weekend with Exeter hosting Northampton Town in Sky Bet League Two while Bristol Rovers host Scunthorpe United.
Another Bee helping his side progress in the EFL Trophy last night was Tom Field who played the 90 minutes for Cheltenham Town at home to Coventry City. The night’s two goals came either side of the interval with Jacob Maddox opening the scoring on 35 minutes before Will Boyle made the game safe within 90 seconds of the restart.
The outing was Tom’s eighth since joining The Robins in August. It’s back to the League Two relegation battle on Saturday as Michael Duff’s side welcome Notts County who sit one place and three points above them in 22nd.
Our other three loanees were not in action in midweek. There is action on Saturday, however, for Theo Archibald and Forest Green Rovers as they host Morecambe in League Two while in the National League Justin Shaibu’s Boreham Wood host Ebbsfleet United.
