Kolbeinn Finnsson and Patrik Gunnarsson both played 90 minutes for Iceland at two age groups on Saturday.
Midfielder Finnsson was in action against hosts China in Chongqing as Iceland's Under-21s continued their Four Team tournament. Following Thursday’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico, Iceland fell behind midway through the first-half after passing up a number of good chances to open the scoring themselves.
That was the way it stayed until the hour as Felix Örn Friðriksson levelled the scores with a powerful effort. Kolbeinn was one of only three players to complete 90 minutes as he picked up his second cap at Under-21 level. Iceland’s final match is tomorrow morning when they take on Thailand, kick-off 7am.
Despite defeat to England Under-19s yesterday, Patrik Gunnarsson and Iceland remain on course to make it out of Group 5 of qualifying for next summer’s European Championships. Steven Sessegnon and Ísak Óli Ólafsson traded goals in the first-half as the two sides went in level in Manavgat.
However, Middlesbrough’s Stephen Walker struck twice after the break as the Young Lions made it two wins from two. Tuesday’s final games see Iceland play pointless Moldova while Turkey face England. Having beaten Turkey on Wednesday, Iceland just need to match their result to qualify for next March’s Elite Qualifying Round. Yesterday’s appearance was Patrik’s third at Under-19 level and 13th in total.
