Neither of Brentford’s two players away on Under-21 international duty got any game time as their times picked up contrasting results yesterday. Ezri Konsa is with England Under-21 while Brentford B midfield player Kolbeinn Birgir Finnsson is with Iceland’s Under-21 side. Both teams played yesterday but neither Brentford player got on the pitch.
England were away in Italy playing a friendly as they prepare for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship next summer. England have qualified for the tournament and Italy will be hosting it, so The Young Lions took on a potential opponent last night. Ezri was not in the matchday squad as England won 2-1 thanks to a brace from Dominic Solanke. England Under-21 have another friendly on Tuesday when they face Denmark.
Kolbeinn and Iceland have gone slightly further afield for their matches. They are in China for a four-team tournament and faced Mexico yesterday. Iceland are reported to have had the better of the game but lost 2-0 and Kolbeinn was an unused substitute. They have two more games before heading back to Europe – against China tomorrow, Saturday, and Thailand on Monday.
