Brentford Women’s FC came from behind to secure a first win in 12 matches as they beat Hampton and Richmond Ladies 2-1 on Sunday.
The Bees, who were without a win since October, fell behind to a sublime long-range effort just before the break. And when they missed a second-half penalty through Dana Johnson it looked like they might be falling to a damaging defeat in the Greater London Women’s Football League Division One relegation battle.
However, Johnson atoned for her previous error when she converted Serena Guardino’s through ball with 25 minutes to play. It was then left to Guardino to secure the vital three points late on as she poked home from close range after Bella Burns had seen her header blocked on the line. Victory means that, barring a set of remarkable results over the coming weeks, The Bees will finish the season the right side of the relegation line.
Brentford Development’s run in the Sue Sharples Memorial Trophy came to an end this afternoon after they lost 2-1 to higher division opposition in the shape of Wandsworth Borough. After a goalless first-half, Shannon Read got Brentford’s goal direct from a free-kick but strikes from Roxanne Ellis and Laura Mott ensured it was Borough who went through.
After Easter the First-Team will return for their final league game against Ashford Town while the Development Team still have three league games remaining as they chase a spot in the Greater London Division Three North promotion places. The Bees currently sit third, with the three sides directly below them, Alexandra Park, Luton Town Hatters, and Actonians Development, still to come this season.
