The Week in Football

The news from around football over the past seven days

5 March 2018

Brentford News

There was not much to report around Griffin Park last week as the Beast from the East put pay to almost all of the action over the past seven days. Saturday’s visit from Cardiff City fell victim to the icy blast with Brentford B’s fixture against Swansea City on Tuesday suffering the same fate. The B Team did at least manage to get underway but, with Kevin O’Connor’s side 4-0 up at the break, the snow arrived to prevent any play after the interval.

Thursday night saw the annual London Football Awards at Battersea Evolution, in aid of the Willow Foundation, with Daniel Bentley walking off with one of the major prizes. The Bees stopper beat Premier League competition to land the Goalkeeper of the Year award.

Sky Bet Championship News

It wasn’t just The Bees who were left kicking their heels this weekend as the winter weather hit. The matches at Aston Villa, Ipswich Town, Sheffield United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers were also postponed.

Of the games that did take place, Fulham secured a massive three points as they beat Derby County 2-1 at Pride Park to move up to fourth in the table. There were also victories for Bristol City, Preston North End, and Middlesbrough as the Play-Off chasers enjoyed a good weekend. At the other end of the table, defeat to Nottingham Forest cost Steve Cotterill his job at Birmingham City. Cotterill departed with Blues 22nd in the table, two points from safety, and was instantly replaced by former Swansea City and Leeds United boss Garry Monk.

Football news

The world of football was stunned on Sunday morning as Fiorentina announced the death of captain Davide Astori, at the age of 31. The Italian international was found dead in his hotel room ahead of The Lillies Serie A game against Udinese. As a mark of respect, all fixtures in Italy’s top division were cancelled on Sunday.
