Ilias Chatzitheodoridis described his loan spell at Cheltenham Town as a “great experience”. The Brentford B defender spent the second half of the 2017/18 season on loan at the Sky Bet League Two club. He played 18 times for them during the loan to add to the three Carabao Cup games and one FA Cup tie that he appeared in for Brentford earlier in the season, his first professional games,
Ilias, speaking after the end of the season, said everyone at Cheltenham was brilliant with him and he found the move enjoyable. Brentford B will return to pre-season training in a few days ahead of the 2018/19 season and Ilias admitted the games at Cheltenham were different to what he had experienced before but he had overcome the challenge.
“It was a very good loan for me,” said Ilias. “The coaches and players were brilliant with me from the first day. It was a great experience for me. It was my first loan and playing League Two football. I found it hard at first but after three or four games I found how the team plays, found the challenges and got past it. It was really enjoyable.
“At the start I was nervous, I had to learn the way they played and adapt. After a few games I found it very good and enjoyed it. It was different to our games in the B team. It was very physical and it was different in terms of the fitness needed.”
After his loan ended, Ilias played for Brentford B in their final game of the campaign. He helped Kevin O’Connor’s side to a win over Manchester City that ended another successful season.
Ilias said: “It was good to come back and play one more game before the end of the season. It was an enjoyable game to play in and a good result.”
