Brentford have completed the signing of England youth international central defender Ezri Konsa. The 20-year-old completed a medical yesterday, Monday 11 June, and finalised a move from Charlton Athletic late in the afternoon.
The Bees signed Ezri for an undisclosed fee and he has signed a three-year contract. The Club also has an option for an additional year.
Ezri, a member of England’s Under-20 World Cup winning squad, came through the youth ranks at Charlton and has been around the First Team squad at the South London side since he was 18. He made his debut before his 19th birthday and has been a regular for the Sky Bet League One side for the past two seasons. He has racked up 86 appearances in all competitions over the past two seasons and played for Charlton in both their League One Play-Off games against Shrewsbury Town last month.
Dean Smith, Brentford FC Head Coach, said: “We are really pleased to have completed the signing of Ezri. He was much sought after and we are very happy that he has chosen us to continue his development. It is a really exciting signing for us because of his age, potential and attitude.
“He has played a lot of games at League One level and his potential is unlimited. Having spoken to many people who have worked with him at both club and international level, and having watched him numerous times, the coaching staff are all looking forward to working with him over the next three years.”
Phil Giles, Brentford FC Co-Director of Football, added: "I'm really pleased that we have been able to sign Ezri quite early in this window, especially as he has been linked with lots of other clubs over an extended period. I think he is a typical Brentford signing and, like many before him, I'm sure we can help him reach an even higher level as a footballer and to develop his career in the Championship. We welcome Ezri to our club and wish him every success as a Brentford player."
Ezri has featured for The Addicks at right back and in midfield as well as in the centre of defence and is part of the England youth set-up. He made his first England appearance in the Under-20 World Cup Semi-Final and was part of the group that took the trophy by beating Venezuela in the Final. In total he played five games at Under-20 level for his country.
Ezri completed his move to West London days after helping England Under-21 win the prestigious Toulon Tournament in France. He made his Under-21 debut in that tournament and featured in the Semi-Final win over Scotland. England beat Mexico in the Final on Saturday. In total, Ezri has seven international appearances to his credit.
