When Ryan Woods picked the ball up in the middle of the Madejski Stadium in December 2015 there didn’t look to be much on for The Bees. However, a raking cross-field pass and three sublime touches from Sergi Canos was all it took for the Liverpool loanee to create the defining moment of his first season with The Bees.
Dean Smith’s side made the short trip down the M4 to Reading that Christmas afternoon inside the Sky Bet Championship’s top ten, having lost just one of the new boss’ first five games in charge. For their part The Royals were only three points worse off in 11th.
The Bees started well and were rewarded after just 17 minutes when Woods let fly from fully 30 yards: the ball arcing away from Jonathan Bond and into the top corner. On any other day, Ryan’s first for the club would have been the hands-down winner of the Goal of the Day and possibly even Goal of the Month, but more was still to come.
With 18 minutes to play, and with the score at 1-1 following Garath McCleary’s leveller, Sergi’s moment arrived. Woods was given time to drive a pass out to the 18-year-old on the wing. His first touch deftly took the ball inside Stephen Quinn, his second was too clever for Michael Hector, and his third sent the ball crashing past Bond from just inside the box.
The goal was Sergi’s third in a Brentford shirt and came the day after he had extended his loan spell at Griffin Park until the end of the season. In commentary for Bees Player, Mark Burridge dubbed it the Goal of the Season and he wasn’t wrong. Sergi ended that season with seven goals, none better than that Reading strike, and returned to Griffin Park last January after a short spell with Norwich City.
