Loan Round-Up: Another busy festive weekend for our loanees

The latest action for our players away from Griffin Park

31 December 2018

Jack Bonham kept his ninth clean sheet of the season to help Bristol Rovers move out of the Sky Bet League One relegation zone on Saturday. Alex Jakubiak netted a quarter of an hour into both halves as The Gas secured a third straight win under caretaker boss Graham Coughlan. Jack’s shutout means he has conceded just 21 games in 23 games in the West Country. The New Year begins for Jack and Rovers with a home game against Burton Albion at The Memorial Stadium.

The Sky Bet League Two action saw Chiedozie Ogbene play 90 minutes for Exeter City as they were beaten 2-1 by ten-man Grimsby Town. The Grecians dominated the game but fell behind to a 14th minute Martyn Woolford strike. Grimsby were reduced to ten men just after the break and, when Jayden Stockley levelled late on, it looked like City would go on to take the points. However, the ten men struck from the spot with ten minutes to play to further dent Exeter’s promotion hopes ahead of Tuesday’s visit to Swindon Town.

El Glosico pitted Tom Field’s Cheltenham Town against Forest Green Rovers and Theo Archibald. As it was, neither Bee was involved in the dramatic 2-2 draw. All four goals came in the final half hour; Luke Varney and Conor Thomas netting for the home side after Rovers had established a two-goal advantage. Tomorrow’s action sees Rovers host Northampton Town while Cheltenham head south-west to Yeovil Town.

Jarvis Edobor made his National League debut for Maidstone as they took a massive three points from their visit to Justin Shaibu’s Boreham Wood. Both Brentford youngsters were introduced at half-time as The Stones looked to hang on to Jake Cassidy’s seventh-minute opener. Their task was made harder with 20 minutes to play as Dan Wishart was sent off. Justin set up a great chance for Wood to level as he was brought down in the box, however, Ross Warner saved Kieran Murtagh’s spot-kick. Victory means The Stones are just three points from safety ahead of Tuesday’s home game against fellow strugglers Dover Athletic while 12th placed Boreham Wood face a derby trip to Barnet.

Also in the National League, Reece Cole was an unused substitute as Maidenhead United lost to a single Cameron James goal at home to bottom-of-the-table Braintree Town. The Magpies head to Aldershot Town tomorrow.

Ryan Woods played the 90 minutes again for Stoke City as they were held 0-0 at struggling Bolton Wanderers to stay on the periphery of the Play-Off picture. A home game against Bristol City is up next for The Potters.
