After four points from two games to begin the Sky Bet Championship campaign, attention switches to the Carabao Cup tonight as Dean Smith's Bees head to Southend United.
Southend United vs Brentford
Carabao Cup First Round
Roots Hall, Kick-Off 7.45pm
Chris Powell's side come into tonight's game still looking for their first victory of the season following a 3-2 opening day defeat to Doncaster Rovers and Saturday's fiery draw at home to Plymouth Argyle, which saw both managers sent to the stands.
The EFL Cup hasn't been kind to The Shrimpers in recent years with their last victory in this competition coming all the way back in 2010. To add to that they have suffered First Round defeat on home soil in each of the last five seasons.
After taking over in January, Chris Powell did plenty of fine tuning to his squad this summer, adding Thimothee Dieng, Tom Hopper, Sam Mantom, Luke Hyam, and Shawn McCoulsky to the group at Roots Hall. Among those to leave during the window were Nile Ranger, Anthony Wordsworth, and Jermaine McGlashan.
Speaking after Saturday's draw with Stoke City, Dean Smith said he would select tonight's team based on those who needed game-time following the opening week of the season, which saw The Bees name unchanged starting XI's against both Rotherham United and Stoke City.
The Bees boss will be without Emiliano Marcondes, Rico Henry, and Chiedozie Ogbene, with the trio all currently unavailable for selection due to injury.
Southend will be without defender Harry Lennon due to a toe injury while Luke Hyam and Sam Barratt both missed the weekend's 1-1 stalemate with Plymouth Argyle and are unlikely to be risked tonight.
Chris Powell is best known for his 15 year association, as both a player and then manager, with Charlton Athletic. The left-back began his career with Crystal Palace before making his big breakthrough at Southend United, playing nearly 300 games for the Essex side during a six-year stay. Following a two years with Derby County, Powell joined Charlton in 1998, going on to play 270 games for The Addicks over three spells at The Valley.
He went into management with Charlton in 2011, winning the League One title during his first full season in charge. The Addicks missed out on the Championship Play-Offs by just three points the following season but that was the high water mark of his time in charge. Disagreements with the owner, and poor league form, saw Powell sacked in March 2014 with Charlton bottom of the Championship. A 14 month spell with Huddersfield Town followed, before Powell returned to Roots Hall in January, guiding The Shrimpers away from the League One relegation zone with nine wins from his first 18 games at the helm.
