In the Vanarama National League, Boreham Wood gave minutes to Ellery Balcombe and Justin Shaibu.
Goalkeeper Balcombe played 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw that saw The Wood take the lead in the first half. The England Under-19 international was described as 'smart' when defending his goal from a constant threat of Gateshead.
He could do nothing to stop the late equaliser, after a game of top drawer saves. The ball was in his grasp until a coming together with an opponent knocked it out of his hands, the referee waved play on and Gateshead netted a dramatic leveller.
Striker Shaibu got 77 minutes in the tie and could have made the game safe with a chance in the early stages of the second period, but it was blocked by a defender.
Elsewhere, in the Carabao Cup, Yeovil Town gave Reece Cole 33 minutes against Aston Villa before bringing him off with what his manager described as a thigh strain. The young midfielder had to watch from the bench as his temporary side suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat, Conor Hourihane netting the winner in the last quarter of an hour.
Theo Archibald also got the full game in Forest Green Rovers' 1-0 win over Swindon Town in the same cup competition. Another narrow win, Tahvon Campbell got the goal on this occasion to put the green side through to face Round Two.
