Winless weekend for loanees

Catch up with the latest on our quartet in action away from Griffin Park

13 August 2018

Ellery Balcombe and Justin Shaibu returned pointless from Boreham Wood’s long trip to AFC Wrexham while there were draws for Theo Archibald and Reece Cole over the weekend.

Wood made the trip to North Wales on Saturday lunchtime, looking to extend their unbeaten run in the National League to three games at the start of the campaign. Justin had an early chance to open the scoring for Wood but sliced over when well placed. That was one of a number of chances that Luke Garrard’s passed up in the early stages and they were made to pay midway through the half as Jordan Maguire-Drew powered a header past Balcombe from close range.

It was 2-0 with 25 minutes to play as Rekiel Pyke capitalised on some hesitancy in the Wood backline to prod home. The visitors continued to create chances with former Bee Ricky Shakes smacking the cross-bar from distance, Shaibu unable to turn home the rebound. With Wood chasing a route back into the game, Mike Fondop added a third late on, as Wrexham registered an impressive home win.

In Sky Bet League Two, Theo Archibald was a late substitute as Forest Green Rovers drew 1-1 at home to Oldham Athletic on Saturday. Reuben Reid fired Rovers into a 22nd minute lead but The Latics levelled from the penalty spot with 12 minutes to play. Theo, who came on shortly before Oldham’s equaliser, had a late chance to win it but he saw his effort flash past the upright as both sides had to settle for a point.

Also in the Fourth Tier, Reece Cole was an unused substitute as Yeovil Town took a point from their trip to Mansfield Town on Saturday. All four goals came in the opening 45 minutes as Diallang Jaiyesimi and Yoann Arquin twice gave The Glovers the lead only for Craig Davies and Matt Preston to level for the home side.

All four of our loanees will hope to be in action again tomorrow night with Boreham Wood hosting Gateshead FC in the National League while Yeovil Town and Forest Green Rovers both have Carabao Cup action to look forward to. The Glovers host Aston Villa, live on Sky Sports Football, while Forest Green make the short trip East to Swindon Town.
