Ellery Balcombe took the plaudits last night on his debut for Boreham Wood as they drew 0-0 at Havant and Waterlooville in the National League.
The 18-year-old goalkeeper joined The Wood on Monday and went straight into the starting XI, alongside fellow Bee Justin Shaibu who played 75 minutes, for the trip to the South Coast. The home side, looking for their first ever win at National League level, started brightly but were thwarted by a hat-trick of fine first-half saves from Ellery.
Firstly, he acrobatically pushed away Wes Fogden’s close-range header before denying Nicke Kabamba when the striker ran through one-on-one. However, he saved the best to last, rushing out to block as Andreas Robinson capitalised on a defensive mix-up. Wood improved after the break but struggled to create any clear-cut chances as both sides settled for a point.
The draw leaves the Hertfordshire side unbeaten in eighth after two games, with a lunchtime trip to Wrexham coming up this Saturday.
